Renewable Energy

With rising fuel costs and climate change constantly being mentioned in the news, renewable energy sources have become a viable solution in order to save on energy costs and reduce carbon emissions.

Ken Wood and Sons Plumbing and Heating understands the importance of reducing our reliance on fossil fuels and have developed an in-depth knowledge and understanding into the technologies available to ensure our clients receive a quality and reliable service.

Our aim is to provide honest advice on the most appropriate solution for each customer, and by becoming a leading installer within the area, offer high quality and cost effective solutions that will help make positive changes for the future.

We offer a full design, supply and installation package in the following renewal energy sources.

Solar Hot Water Heating

Solar hot water heating is the UK’s fastest growing renewable energy technology and can work efficiently in our climate, producing up to 70% of an annual domestic hot water requirements.

The high efficiency system with an approximate 20-year life span uses radiation from the sun to convert this energy into heat via an arrangement of pipes and tubes fixed to the roof.

This system can be used in both domestic and commercial properties and is also an ideal application for swimming pool heating due to the low temperatures required.

Ground Source Heat Pumps

A few metres below the ground the temperature stays at around 11-12 degrees Celsius throughout the year and by using ground source heat pumps, this heat can be sourced to provide space heating, and in some cases help pre-heat your water for your central heating system.

Ground source heat pumps use of a system of buried pipework, which transfers heat from the ground to a water and anti-freeze mixture, which is then pumped to your underfloor heating or radiators for space heating.

Although connected to the electricity supply, the system eliminates the need to be connected to a gas or oil line, and for every unit of electricity used, 3 – 4 units of heat is produced.

Air Source Heat Pumps

Air source heat pumps absorb heat from the outside to provide space heating to the inside of the building, using a similar process as that of ground source heat pumps, without the installation of buried cables and therefore cheaper to install.

Taking energy from the air using an Air Handling Unit situated outside, a large fan draws air into the unit, to then compress it to a higher temperature and transfer it into your central heating system and hot water tank.

Although not generally suitable for hot water heating as the system only raises the temperature of the water to about 35°C - 40°C, it is very suitable for underfloor heating and capable of covering the heat requirements of a well insulated property.

Mechanical Heat Ventilation Recovery

Mechanical heat ventilation recovery consists of two fans, a heat exchanger, filters, ducts, inlet and outlet diffusers and a controlling system in order to reduce the ventilation heat loss by 80-90% and the total heat loss by 30-60%.

Outlets are normally placed in the rooms where moisture and odour are produced, i.e. the kitchen and bathrooms, and the inlet diffusers are placed in rooms where the people are present over periods of time, i.e. the living room and bedrooms. In this way the moisture and odour from cooking and bathing etc. is removed effectively without polluting the surrounding rooms, and fresh air is blown into the building, providing a good indoor climate.

Building ventilation is necessary to achieve a healthy and comfortable indoor environment, but as energy prices continue to rise it is necessary to reduce the energy consumption and by using mechanical ventilation with heat recovery, reduces the ventilation heat loss significantly
